A youth football team has been scored a £750 cash boost from a leading housebuilder.

Chorley Football Club, which will operate teams at under-15 and under-16 this season, was selected to receive the funding as part of the Persimmon Homes Lancashire Healthy Communities campaign.

The scheme will see Persimmon, give away more than £600,000 to sporting causes across the UK over the next 10 months, with an overall top national prize of £200,000 in addition to numerous regional donations.

The youth development teams, based at Lostock Sport Club, provide football opportunities for all children in the community.

Dave Riche, chief executive of the club, said: “The club has a good connection with the community and for a number of years now we have provided football coaching opportunities for young people during the school holidays.

“We know the importance of sport for health and wellbeing, and our aim is to create a continuous pathway for local players, from youth to the first team.

“Our youth development is entirely self-funding so we will use the £750 from Persimmon Homes to provide kit for one of our new teams.”

Every month this year, Persimmon Homes Lancashire will hand out £750 to either a sports team, or individual aged 21 years and under in the area, with the money to be spent on kit, equipment, coaching or facilities.

A shortlist of 30 will then be created for a national final to be decided on a public vote, with the winning club or individual receiving £200,000 to create a long-lasting legacy and two runners-up receiving £50,000 each.

The new fund is in addition to the £720,000 the company already donates through its hugely successful Community Champions scheme each year.

Diane Finch, sales and marketing director for Persimmon Homes Lancashire, said: “We are pleased to be backing Chorley Football Club’s youth development.

“The core aim of the Healthy Communities scheme is to support grassroots sports opportunities for young people in the areas where we are building new homes. The work of Chorley FC to engage with children and build their confidence and fitness is a great example of the type of project we want to help.”

Persimmon Homes Lancashire has new homes developments across Lancashire and Cumbria.
